The cunning, punning Francophile phrases and seasonal typography on this month’s cover of Wallpaper nod to the issues graphic-minded content and the graphic shapes in the fashion stories. The cover and the image are the result of a collaboration between photographer Paola Kudacki, and Finish typographers Katariina Lamberg and Anna Ahonen. They were given the words and they provided Wallpaper with striking imagery and fabulous graphics. The “Printemps” cover typography, hand drawn by Lamberg and Ahonen, is inspired by French 1930′s typeface Bifur, by AM Cassandre.

The “Graphic Nouvel” font is based on Carol Twombly’s 1990 Calson revival. “Each element must have a purpose,” says Lamberg. Decorative elements have to have meaning. We live in a culture with too much meaningless decoration in design.”
